The institute was formed 18 July 1983 by the state of Baden Württemberg.
It is a foundation under civil law.
It is the foundation´s goal to conduct research and development in microelectronic circuits and systems and to implement the achieved results into an industrial environment. This challenge especially focuses on
- the construction und operation of research and development equipment to design microelectronic circuits and systems
- the construction und operation of process series to manufacture trial, sample and prototype circuits
- the implementation of research and development projects for the German federal government, the federal states of Germany and research facilities
- the promotion of practical training for scientific and technical personnel in the field of microelectronics.
