Researchers at the Institut für Elektrische und Optische Nachrichtentechnik (INT), the Universität Stuttgart and the Institut für Mikroelektronik Stuttgart (IMS CHIPS) have reached a world record in the energy-efficient photonic integration in silicon. This is an important milestone in energy efficiency during online data transmission and telecommunication. The researchers work with optimized aperiodic nano-size grid structures equipped with a newly developed back mirror. This enabled a ground-breaking 87 percent result in the interface efficiency for light coming from standard glas fiber in integrated photonic wave ducts.
