increasing proliferation\nof autonomous technical systems, the\nfields of metrology and sensor technology\nhave undergone rapid developments\nin recent years and now represent integral\ncomponents of all modern products\nand processes. Sensors are therefore\nneeded in unprecedented numbers to\nmeet the growing demand in autonomous\ntechnical systems for the everyday\nactivities in mobility, healthcare, IoT and\nsustainability. However, the sensors used\ntoday are increasingly facing technological\nlimits in terms of their functionality\nand the sensitivity that can be achieved\nwith them. Examples include the lack of\nsufficiently sensitive and accurate as well\nas cost-effective sensors for personalized\nmedicine or autonomous driving. In order to utilize\nthe immense potential provided by\nquantum technologies as quickly and\nefficiently as possible and to secure\nit for Germany as a business location\nin the long term, QSens is designed\nmuch like a holistic ecosystem. Due to\nits interdisciplinary structure, QSens will\nbe able to independently generate new\nmarket-relevant innovations for society\u00b4s\nchallenges of mobility, healthcare, IoT\nand sustainability by making use of\nquantum sensors and transfering them\ninto market products.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this, QSens relies on a\nhigh degree of local capacities and\ncombines the scientific excellence of\nuniversity partners in basic research\nand engineering with the experience of\ninnovative large companies as well as\nthe dynamics of SMEs and start-ups. This\nalso creates the kind of sustainability that\nmakes it possible to bridge the \u201evalley of\ndeath\u201c in the transition from the research\nlab to everyday life, see figure above.\nSpecifically, in the first three-year QSens\nimplementation phase, application-driven\nwork is done on the market introduction\nof quantum sensor technology in\nthe areas of (bio)medical technology,\nindustrial sensor technology and sensors\nfor research within the framework of\nsix joint research projects. In addition,\nthere are two joint research projects\ndealing specifically with the scalable\nproduction of quantum sensors in diamond\nand\/or silicon carbide, see figure\nbelow. The cluster is rounded off by two\ncluster-forming projects, one of which\nis dedicated to interdisciplinary topics\nsuch as a dissemination in industry and\nsociety and the support of QSens spinoffs.\nThe second cross-cluster project,\n\u201eQuantum4SME\u201c, is dedicated to establishing\nan ecosystem that will enable\nfabless manufacturing of quantum sensors\nfor SMEs and startups before too\nlong.
