Photon AI - Funding for 1.5 million euros

The Verband Region Stuttgart is investing €3.6 million in the future of artificial intelligence – including €1.5 million in support of our project Photon KI. The aim is to advance photonic computing technologies, which use light instead of electricity. This enables more energy-efficient and powerful AI systems, especially in industrial applications.

IMS Wafer

The focus is on applications where traditional computing technology reaches its limits: for example, in training large AI models or in particularly computationally intensive areas of microelectronics. IMS CHIPS will investigate in a real-world laboratory how photonic processors can be used in practical applications. This real-world laboratory for photonic AI is scheduled to launch next year and will then also be available for applications and independent experiments by industry and research institutions at universities and colleges throughout the state. The innovative computing systems will be installed and operated at the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS).

This funding not only strengthens a pioneering project but also the innovative capacity of the Stuttgart region in the field of energy-efficient high-performance computing and new microelectronics solutions.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Stuttgart Region Association for their trust and generous investment.
