Photon AI - Funding for 1.5 million euros
The Verband Region Stuttgart is investing €3.6 million in the future of artificial intelligence – including €1.5 million in support of our project Photon KI. The aim is to advance photonic computing technologies, which use light instead of electricity. This enables more energy-efficient and powerful AI systems, especially in industrial applications.

The focus lies on use cases where conventional computing reaches its limits – such as training large-scale AI models or processing highly compute-intensive workloads in microelectronics. IMS CHIPS and the Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum Stuttgart (HLRS) are jointly exploring the practical deployment of photonic processors in a dedicated real-world lab environment.
This funding not only enables a forward-looking research initiative, but also strengthens the Stuttgart Region’s position as a hub for innovation in energy-efficient high-performance computing and next-generation microelectronics.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Stuttgart Region Association for their trust and generous investment. We look forward to close collaboration and successful implementation together with HLRS.
