During the recent meeting on October 21, 2025, between Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann, the focus was on the future of Germany’s technological sovereignty.

Prime Minister Kretschmann highlighted the need for greater independence in the field of semiconductors and chip technologies, stating:

“Our country must become more sovereign in this area,” said Kretschmann. “Baden-Württemberg can play a significant role here – through companies that drive these technologies forward, apply them, and make data available to businesses.”

As an example of the state’s strong research and innovation landscape, Kretschmann mentioned IMEC in Heilbronn, the Fraunhofer IHF, and IMS CHIPS in Stuttgart as world-leading institutions. He emphasized that, particularly with regard to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises, these organizations form a central pillar of Baden-Württemberg’s technological competitiveness.

We are very pleased with this recognition and see it as a strong affirmation of our ongoing commitment to expanding research, design, and production of micro- and nanosystems in Baden-Württemberg. With our expertise, we make a vital contribution to both the national and European semiconductor strategies.

IMS CHIPS supports the vision of a strong, innovation-driven, and sovereign chip industry—from small and medium-sized enterprises to the Giga Factory.
