P4Q – European Photonic Manufacturing Lines for Quantum Applications

IMS CHIPS is a partner in the European project Photonics for Quantum (P4Q), which supports the establishment of European manufacturing lines for the industrialization of photonic quantum technologies. The project is funded under the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) by the European Union and national funding agencies of the participating countries.

P4Q brings together 29 partners from research and industry with the objective of further developing Europe-wide infrastructure for the design and manufacturing of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for quantum applications. These pilot lines aim to transfer quantum photonic technologies from research environments into reliable and scalable industrial manufacturing.

Photonic technologies play a key role in future quantum systems, including quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing. To address this, P4Q focuses on critical challenges such as minimizing optical losses, ensuring stable manufacturing processes, enabling hybrid integration, and developing scalable testing and packaging technologies.

A major focus of the project is the development and stabilization of advanced manufacturing processes, as well as Process Development Kits (PDKs) and Assembly Development Kits (ADKs). These tools are intended to standardize the development and production of quantum photonic components and facilitate the transition to industrial-scale manufacturing.

IMS CHIPS contributes its expertise in integrated photonics to the consortium and is responsible for the Thin-Film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) pilot line within the P4Q project. Through this contribution, IMS CHIPS supports the development of high-performance and scalable photonic platforms for future quantum applications.

Through P4Q, Europe aims to strengthen its technological leadership in quantum photonics and establish the foundations for future industrial applications and production capabilities.
